Lacey Cotter Elected Summit Municipal Democratic Committee Chair

Summit, New Jersey – The Summit Municipal Democratic Committee (SMDC) is proud to announce the election of Lacey Cotter as Chair. Ms. Cotter succeeds the outgoing Interim Chair, Lisa Campbell.

Summit Democrats have always worked to make Summit a better place to live, work, shop and raise children. The organization is committed to advancing fairness, justice and equality. Over the years, the SMDC has helped to elect leaders who have adopted programs that reflect Summit’s evolving needs, including full-day kindergarten, a safe-to-school sidewalk master plan, renewal and revitalization of the Community Center (formerly the Summit Recreation Center), support for our downtown merchants through the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in today’s 99% first-floor retail space occupancy rate, and the implementation of diverse and inclusive community programs.

“I look forward to building on the strong legacy of Democratic achievements for Summit by continuing to advocate for all voices through community initiatives,” said Ms. Cotter. “We are focused on strengthening our community by electing local representatives who embody a vision that Summit is a town for everyone.”

Ms. Cotter is a champion of Democratic causes. She is a Governor’s appointee to the NJ Humanities Council. As an advocate for safe and sane gun laws, she serves on the BRADY NJ State Executive Committee. She has implemented community programs, including a rally on Summit’s Village Green following the Uvalde school shooting that included NJ Attorney General Matt Platkin, Senator Joe Cryan and survivors of gun violence. As a member of the NJ Steering Committee of Pete (Buttigieg) for America, she brought the first presidential candidate to Summit, fresh off his win in the Iowa Caucuses. In 2018, she launched over 100,000 door knocks for Malinowski for Congress.

Following the Women’s March in 2016, Ms. Cotter co-founded Summit Marches On, a voter engagement organization focused primarily on national political issues and elections. In 2017, Ms. Cotter ran for the New Jersey Assembly in the 21st Legislative District against a long-term incumbent and narrowed the winning margin compared to past elections from a double-digit lead to just 1.2%.

“I believe in Summit’s tradition of collegial political competition,” added Ms. Cotter. “Once the votes are counted and the winner announced, we should all feel comfortable with the voters’ choice. SMDC values truth, transparency and democracy, and we will respond to any efforts to spread misinformation or mislead voters during a campaign.”

“We are excited to have Lacey Cotter take the helm of the Summit Democrats, continuing our tradition of strong female leadership,” said outgoing SMDC Interim Chair, Lisa Campbell. “Lacey brings a depth of experience and a fresh perspective to our committee. We can depend on her to continue the growth of the Democratic party in Summit.”

Ms. Cotter has lived in Summit for over 20 years and is a mother to four sons.
